TCMF Spotlight: Kunitan

In the weeks leading up to the Eighth Annual Texas Community Music Festival, we will be spotlighting some of the ensembles that will be participating in this year’s program.  Kunitan will be performing Sunday, April 21 at 2:45pm, at Central Market North.  (Not 4pm as originally posted)

Kunitan is a South American music community ensemble. In Bolivian Quechua, our name means “in the moment,” which we feel captures the spirit of our group in terms of our openness to new players and our sheer enjoyment of the music in the moment. Kunitan includes members from a range of countries including Colombia, Peru, Chile, Bolivia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Mexico, and the U.S.

Our repertoire covers a variety of traditional South American rhythms like Peruvian huaynos, Bolivian tinkus, Ecuadorian sanjuanitos, Argentinian chacareras, Brazilian choros, Colombian bambucos fiesteros, and Venezuelan joropos among others. Our group features a diversity of instruments including Andean charangos, panpipes, kenas (notched flutes), tarkas (Bolivian festival flutes), bombo (bass drum), goat hooves rattles, donkey jaw bone rattles, violins, guitars, trumpet, congas, and the Afro-Peruvian cajón.
